As much as we love fast road bikes with skinny tires and quick handling, we figured out early on that we wanted a classic steel bike for a different type of riding. Exploring dirt paths and gravel roads, riding in the rain, commuting, or running errands wearing normal clothes – sometimes extreme measures call for resuscitating the past.
Our Strada Bianca model is designed like a 60s-era road race bike: it’s fast on smooth pavement but relaxed-yet-tough when the road turns to trail, cobbles, gravel, or dirt. Whether wearing big tires or fenders, riding on civilized roads or un-, carrying a light load – this bike does it all.
We build these for 57mm mid-reach caliper rim brakes and the frame with steel fork will take up to a 38mm tire. TRP and Velo Orange offer great calipers or we can build for Paul Racer M centerpull brakes for that quick-stopping, old-school vibe.
Strada Brutta (“ugly road”), on the other hand, will take a 44-48mm tire and uses cantilever or “V”-brakes. Similar to our disc-braked version, Il Mostro Sterrato, this is designed for rough roads, tracks, and trails - possibly with a light load - but with less complication and a smoother ride. One might even consider something in the 650b/27.5” wheel size.
Strada Bianca and Strada Brutta are offered with steel forks and your choice of curved or straight blades. We have several great tubing options for these frames including Columbus PegoRichie or MAX; smooth-riding or a more robust feel – it all depends on the application and your desired ride. Fender mounts are standard on both steel models; rack mounts are standard on Brutta and optional on Strada Bianca.
