As much as we love fast road bikes with skinny tires and quick handling, we figured out early on that we wanted a bike for a different type of riding. Exploring dirt paths and gravel roads, riding in the rain, or wandering aimlessly wearing normal clothes – sometimes extreme measures call for resuscitating the past.
Our Strada Bianca model (“white road” in Italian) is designed like a 60s-era road race bike. It’s fast on smooth pavement but relaxed-yet-tough when the road turns to trail, cobbles, gravel, or dirt. Whether it’s wearing fenders, carrying a light load, ridden on civilized roads or un-, or fitted with a lighting system – this bike does it all.
Most builds use 57mm mid-reach caliper rim brakes from Shimano, TRP, or Velo Orange but we can also build for centerpull brakes if preferred. Our favorite combos are:
- Skinny 26mm Compass or 25-27mm Vittoria tires, narrow PDW fenders
- 28-32mm Compass, Vittoria, or Challenge tires, 40mm Honjo fenders
- 32-38mm tires, perhaps wide PDW fenders
We can build you a HampCo steel fork or use one of the many carbon forks available: Seven 5e, Whiskey Parts Co. #7, Wound Up commuter – good choices all.
We build our steel Strada Bianca using Columbus Spirit/Pegorichie tubing. Our titanium frames are constructed from straight-gauge 3/2.5 tubing.
