Great interview! Maybe my fat a++ can drop some lbs and get on one of these tours. Racing in the 80’s in California as a Junior I was a huge A.H fan. Marras Italian pastrys in SF Andy rolled up after a Coit tower T.T and got some grub as I watched his bike sitting outside making sure nobody ripped it off. Good times!

I first saw Andy in person at the 1992 Tour de France. I had taken part in Breaking Away Cycling Tours’ Alps Express Tour and had done the Alpe d’Huez climb a couple hours before Andy became the first American to win there. My wife, Kim, and I had walked up to the first switchback and were thrilled to see Andy come by leading a four-man breakaway. Seven years later we enjoyed our best vacation ever by participating in one of his Cinghiale Tours. We came back to Zi Martino the following spring to do another Cinghiale Tour, and I even ordered two Hampsten bikes, a Cinghiale Pro for me and a Strada Bianca for Kim. Both now reside in my son’s garage and I ride a Serotta Ottrott that I bought in 2007. I hope one day to return to Castagneto Carducci and Zi Martino to ride those magical Tuscan roads — and perhaps meet Andy again.
