Boost your cycling fitness forward as we ride beautiful, challenging, low-traffic roads in the Los Alamos/Santa Ynez Valley. We will ride, taste wine and enjoy the local cuisine. Weather is typically good, in the mid-high 60’s with cool mornings and evenings.

The closest airports are:

Santa Maria (SMX) www.santamariaairport.com is about 15 minutes north of Los Alamos and is served by United Express (limited schedule).

Santa Barbara (SBA) www.flysba.com is about 50 minutes south of Los Alamos and is served by United, American, Alaska/Horizon, America West and Delta.

Rental cars are available at both airports but Santa Maria has limited rental car operating hours so double check arrival and departure times.

Details

This is an affordable, do-it-yourself cycling camp. This is NOT a catered/sagged deluxe tour. You must get yourself to Los Alamos and book your own motel rooms.

Our price includes one dinner, one breakfast, and we will have a support vehicle with basic supplies on most of the rides. Area maps are available if you feel the need to head back early or to extend your ride.

Camp participants are welcome to ride as much or as little as they like and are welcome to arrive/depart early or late as is convenient.

Total miles and elevation for the week: 390 miles (or so) and 34,000’.

Camp Fee: $250/person or $50/day. Please send payment in full to:

Friday March 16:

Arrive in Los Alamos, check-in, bike set-up and check-out ride.

  • Riding: 2:00 PM. Cat Canyon/Foxen Canyon/Alisos Canyon. 34 miles and 2500’ or other self- guided riding.
  • Cocktails and get acquainted: 5pm, Fabulous Skyview Lounge.
  • Dinner: 7pm, BBQ night at Twin Oaks Restaurant in Los Alamos.

Saturday March 17:

  • Riding: 9:00 AM roll out. Our greatest hits ride. 58 miles and 4800’. We begin with a 3-mile ascent of Drum Canyon and continue to Buellton. Then ride Ballard Canyon, Foxen Canyon and return via Cat Canyon.
  • Wining and Dining: 5:00 PM at American Flatbread www.americanflatbread.com in Los Alamos. Our very own gourmet pizza restaurant serving delicious handcrafted, wood fired pizza along with the best locally made beer and wine.
  • Evening: Socialize @ Chez Schnitz, 7:30pm.

Sunday March 18:

  • Ride: 9:00 AM roll out. Our favorite Cat Canyon takes us out (and back) to Santa Maria Mesa Rd. then up and over the incomparable Tepesquet Canyon to Hwy 166. 69 miles and 7800’. Tepesquet Canyon offers 30 miles of sublime climbing and descending.
  • Wining and Dining: Your choice tonight

Monday March 19:

  • Riding: 9:00 AM roll out. Alisos Canyon/Foxen Canyon to Los Olivos and out Figueroa Mtn. Road to the base of the climb. 55 miles and 3500’. If you are so inclined, ascend Figueroa Mtn. and back adding 20 miles and 3500’.
  • Wining and Dining: 6pm, The Hitching Post in Buellton.

Tuesday March 20:

  • Breakfast: Chez Schnitz 7:00-8:00 AM.
  • Riding: Caravan departs from Los Alamos 8:30 AM for Santa Margarita, a one hour drive north on Hwy.101 for some delightful new roads and Mexican lunch in San Luis Obispo. 72 miles and 6000’.
  • Or, stay close to Los Alamos and ride Dominion Road Loop out and back via Alisos Canyon/Foxen Canyon. 50 miles and 2900’.
  • Wining and Dining: Your choice tonight.

Wednesday March 21:

  • Breakfast: Buellton, your choice
  • Riding: Easy day or self-guided for more miles. Ride to Sisquoc Winery and back. 40 miles and 1500’
  • 4pm, bike-cleaning seminar with the experts.
  • Wining and Dining: 6pm, Firestone Walker Brewery in Buellton.

Thursday March 22:

  • 9:00 AM roll out. Ride the Jualachichi. 70 miles and 6800’. We’ll begin in Buellton and ride out Santa Rosa Road over the Jualachichi Summit to Jalama Beach and back. Food available at Jalama Beach County Park store and grill.
  • Wining and Dining: 6pm, catered buffet in the Fabulous Skyview Lounge.
